Now this question could mean different things to different people - what time of year, or how long to leave the old lines in place. We will answer both very shortly.

Signs Your Car Park Lines Need Repainting

It is much easier for us, and less costly for the customer to repaint lines before they have faded completely, it gives us something to follow, so we can set up the machine and get marking straight away. Leaving lines too long will mean we need to mark straight lines, starts and stops etc. before we can get painting.

Car Park Line Marking
Don't let it get to this

Let's assume your lines arent faded to the point you can barely see them, the question of when to repaint them is then a matter of preference and user behaviour. Bold prominent lines lead to better driver behaviour - that's a face. If you have a busy car park with a range of different users then keeping lines fresh is a priority - think shopping centre, retail carparks etc. If you have a carpark where only staff park once in the morning, they can take their time, not under pressure and their impression of the car park isnt going to lose you business, then you can most likely let the lines go further. Still, get them done while they are still clearly visible for us to paint.

If you want to know more about how long different markings should last in different environments, we wrote a blog about it here: How Long Do Line Markings Last.

Is There a Time of Year That is Better Than Others For Repainting Our Carpark?

Extremes of hot and cold should be avoided. That being said, Auckland is fairly lucky in that we can put down new car park line markings almost all year round with a little bit of planning. Ideally July would be avoided - it is too wet and cold, although we can schedule work from midday onwards on sunny days when the ground has warmed up a bit. Summer months are more reliable and your job is less likely to be delayed due to weather. We have more daylight hours to get the job done, and the temperatures set the paint faster. On really hot days we may need to do the work early morning or at night if asphalt temperatures get too high.

To summarise, avoid the middle of winter if you can, but we have done successful line marking all year round.

Planning Around Business Disruption

Most businesses have daily closed hours, or at least weekends, which gives us ample opportunity to complete work. If your business is 24/7 apart from some annual shutdown periods, then this might set the dates for when the best time for your business is.

Also a consideration is how soon the lines can be driven over, or what we in the biz call "no pick up time". No pick up time is the time after which a tyre or shoe will not get wet when contacting paint. Now this is not a full cure time - tyres will still leave imprints, and if they turn the steering w

heel directly on the line marking, this will cause damage. But it is a useful piece of information.

In winter, no pick up time is around 20 minutes. In summer this could reduce to as little as 5 minutes or even less. So if you have a site that must remain operational and we can work on a small area at a time, this might push you towards a summer booking.

Conclusion

We hope this covers the question you came here to answer, but as with most questions you can see that the answer is "it depends'. We are more than happy to answer any questions, take a look at photos, or visit your site.
